Submission Guidelines

This page provides basic information for authors who are interested in submitting their work for publication by Avalonia.

The Western Esoteric Traditions of Magic Mysticism and CeremonyAvalonia is an independent esoteric publishing company based in the United Kingdom. We launched our first book in 2005, prior to which Avalonia existed as a website run by author and owner Sorita d'Este, acting as a community portal for a variety of online and physical communities in the London (UK) area, as well as providing community forums, classes, courses and numerous articles and resources.

In 2010 we will be expanding our catalogue of books extensively, with a number of new and established authors and their work. See Forthcoming Titles for information. It is going to be a busy year and we believe a very successful one as the interest in our work is growing, based not on hype but on the reputation we have gained over the last few years for being different from what is generally available in the world of occult publishing. The work we publish reflects original research and original work, whilst often deemed not "commercial" enough by mainstream publishers, we believe that making this work available achieves our prime object which is 'expanding the esoteric horizons'. Our passion for the esoteric is what drives us.

The subjects we publish include: Progressive works on Ceremonial Magic, Traditional Grimoires from the renaissance through to the 19th century, books on the deities and religion of the ancient world, subjects related to modern paganism (incl. Wicca, Druidry), research projects on subjects in the folklore and mythology genre, as well as works exploring specialised aspects of the Wiccan Tradition and Traditional European Witchcraft practices. If you have not done so already, you may want to browse through our catalogue for a better understanding of the topics we cover, if you are unfamiliar with the topics and have never read any books we have published, we highly recommend you consider doing this prior to submitting a proposal for consideration. It is the best way for you to gain an understanding of what we do after all!

We pay slightly higher than normal royalties, but we don't offer any advances.

If you are still certain that you would like us to consider your proposal, then please take note of the following:

1/ What we are looking for:

Quality and Format:

* Of primary importance to us is that your work reflect original research and original ideas. We are NOT interested in works which rehash previous volumes or ideas. All claims should be backed up with good old fashioned references and evidence.
* Work written in clear, well written English will always be preferred. We don't do translations, nor do we publish books in any other language other than English at the present time.
* Work should be submitted in electronic format, we cannot accept manuscripts in any other format at the present time.

Subjects & Genre:

* Non-fiction ONLY.
* We are particulary interested in well researched works on folklore, mythology and religious / magical history.
* Practical, original and progressive "how-to" works on specialised areas of modern ceremonial magic, alternative and earth based spirituality and modern paganism are all welcome.

Please note however that the answer to any "Book of Shadows" or "Book of Spells" proposals will almost certainly be a "NO" so if you plan on submitting something like that, please make sure to include a very good reason as to why your work will fulfil our aims of "Expanding the Esoteric Horizons"! Likewise, we don't publish fiction, faction or poetry; nor to we publish childrens books. If you make yourself familiar with our catalogue before starting your submission you will save yourself and us a lot of time and heartache!

2/ How to submit your proposal to Avalonia:
If you have read all of the above and feel even more strongly than before that your book is suited to our catalogue, then we would love to hear from you. In the first instance please email us - liberavalonia@gmail.com with a brief outline of what your book is about, together with a biography of yourself. Our works are all written by individuals who are highly aclaimed experts in their field, they have expertise, experience and knowledge in their respective fields, something which our readers have come to expect from the work we publish - so please make sure to tell us why you wrote the book and what your expertise, experience and knowledge in your field is based on.

Please avoid attachments, and unless we ask DO NOT send us your full manuscript at this point.

If we are interested in your book, we will get in touch and talk to you about your project in more detail.

NB*** PLEASE DO NOT SEND US UNSOLICITED MANUSCRIPTS BY POST.
